Somerset Bowls Association Job Description  -  Performance Manager

 

Purpose of the Job:

Ø  To develop the performance of the SBA’s teams and the players

 

Expenses:         

Ø  Fixed amount payable per annum (as agreed by the SBA Executive Board (EB)) to cover travel

Ø  Other expenses payable, to a ceiling agreed by SBA EB and verified by receipts

 

Reports to:

Ø  General Secretary

 

Jobholder’s Team:

Ø  Managers of all of the teams listed in the Appendix (The Performance Manager may manage one or more of these teams. Other managers may manage more than one team.)

Ø  Selectors

Ø  Child Protection Officer

Ø  Perhaps other assistants

 

Main Responsibilities:

Ø  Maintaining the rules which govern the appointment of managers and selectors and the selection of teams

Ø  With the assistance of managers and selectors, ensuring the selection of squads and teams

Ø  Running trials to evaluate players

Ø  Organizing coaching sessions to develop individual and team performance, skills and knowledge

Ø  On match days, preparing the team, examining individual and team performances and debriefing the team

Ø  Being the point of liaison for SBA with coaches’ and umpires’ organizations

Ø  Providing a safe environment in which children and vulnerable adults can enjoy taking part in the game of bowls

Ø  Maintaining a record of any business conducted by performance committees

Ø  Gaining EB ratification for team managers, selectors and any other assistants appointed, and managing, developing and co-ordinating them to support the jobholder in discharging these responsibilities

Ø  Consulting widely to generate ideas and plans for development

Ø  Managing these responsibilities within the budget set by the EB

Ø  Reporting quarterly to the EB and annually to the Communications Meeting (each April), Council Meeting (each October) and AGM (each November)

 

Measures of annual success:

Ø  Match results

Ø  Number of international trialists and selections

Ø  Income and expenditure against budget

Ø  Number of new ideas

Other close working relationships with:

Ø  Match Secretary, re selection meetings and match organization

Ø  Competition Secretary, to be advised of names of best competition performers.

Ø  Marketing Manager (or their Publicity and Press Officer) for the reporting of “performance” news

 

Other important relationships with:

Ø  Umpires’ Organizations

Ø  Coaches’ Organizations

Ø  A strong interest in competitive bowls

Ø  Experience of playing in competitive representative teams

Ø  Excellent management and leadership skills

Ø  Good judge of players’ abilities and performances

Ø  Good organizational skills

Ø  Good communication & interpersonal skills

Ø  Familiarity with budgetary processes

Ø  E-mail, telephone and mobile phone facilities

Ø  Personal mobility
