Somerset Bowls Association Job Description - Competition
Secretary Purpose of
the Job: Ø
To run all National and County Competitions (listed in
the Appendix) Expenses:
Ø
Fixed amount payable per annum (as agreed by the SBA
Executive Board (EB)) to cover travel Ø
Other expenses payable, to a ceiling agreed by SBA EB
and verified by receipts Reports to: Ø
General Secretary Jobholder’s
Team: Ø
Assistants for some or all of the main activities, in
particular: o
Running the
competitions (perhaps one assistant per category (they could be divided up
according to the Appendix)) o
Publishing
the Players’ Yearbook Main
Responsibilities: Ø
Maintaining
the rules which govern the playing of the competitions Ø
Attracting
entries into all the competitions, and collecting and accounting for entry
fees as directed by the Treasurer Ø
Organising
“audited” draws Ø
Running the
competitions, in particular organizing Finals Days Ø
Advising
Bowls England of national qualifiers and liaising with the qualifiers Ø
Acquiring
prizes, mementoes, certificates, etc. for presentation to winners Ø
Maintaining a
register, and ensuring safe custody, of perpetual trophies Ø
Maintaining a
record of any business conducted by competition committees, particularly
those arbitrating on issues concerning rules and appeals Ø
Gaining EB
ratification for any assistants appointed, and managing, developing and
co-ordinating them to support the jobholder in discharging these
responsibilities Ø
Consulting
widely to generate ideas and plans for development Ø
Managing
these responsibilities within the budget set by the EB Ø
Reporting
quarterly to the EB and annually to the Communications Meeting (each
April), Council Meeting (each October) and AGM (each November) Measures of
annual success: Ø
Number of
Entries per Competition Ø
Completion of
all competitions on schedule Ø
Number of
Tributes per Complaint Ø
Income and
expenditure against budget Ø
Number of new
ideas Ø
Attendances
at SBA meetings Other close
working relationships with: Ø
Logistics
Manager – who will arrange dates and venues to meet competition
requirements Ø
League
Secretary – whose league programme will be included in the Players’
Yearbook Ø
Match
Secretary, whose fixture list will be published in the Players’ Yearbook Ø
Performance
Manager, to provide names of best competition performers. Ø
Marketing
Manager: o

Publicity and Press Officer) for the reporting of competition news o
(or their Web
Site Manager) to keep up-to-date results on the web. Other
important relationships with: Ø
Umpires’
Organizations, for the appointment of umpires when required. Ø
Treasurer for
the receipt of entry fees and award of prizes Ø
Logistics
Manager (or any Presentations’ Secretary) regarding the presentation of
prizes Desirable
Jobholder Qualities: Ø
A strong

Experience of
playing in latter stages of county competitions Ø

organizational skills Ø

Good computer
skills (in particular, with spreadsheets & word processing) Ø
