Somerset Bowls Association Job Description  -  League Secretary

 

Purpose of the Job:

  To run all County Leagues

 

Expenses:      

  Fixed amount payable per annum (as agreed by the SBA Executive Board (EB)) to cover travel

  Other expenses payable, to a ceiling agreed by SBA EB and verified by receipts

 

Reports to:

  General Secretary

 

Jobholder’s Team:

   Assistants for some or all of the main activities, organized on a league &/or regional basis

 

Main Responsibilities:

  Maintaining the rules which govern the playing of the leagues (As at 2008, there is only one said league, the SCBA County League. However, there may be other opportunities to explore.) 

  Retaining existing teams and attracting new entrants to the league(s)

  Collecting and accounting for entry fees as directed by the Treasurer

  Organising league fixtures

  Running the leagues on a day-to-day basis, ensuring results and up-to-date league tables are published and any promotions and relegations understood and actioned

  Acquiring prizes, mementoes, certificates, etc. for presentation to winners

  Maintaining a register, and ensuring safe custody, of perpetual trophies

  Maintaining a record of any business conducted by league committees

  Gaining EB ratification for any assistants appointed, and managing, developing and co-ordinating them to support the jobholder in discharging these responsibilities

  Consulting widely to generate ideas and plans for development

  Managing these responsibilities within the budget set by the EB

  Reporting quarterly to the EB and annually to the Communications Meeting (each April), Council Meeting (each October) and AGM (each November)

 

Measures of annual success:

  Number of entries per league

  Completion of all league fixtures on schedule

  Number of Tributes per Complaint

  Income and expenditure against budget

  Number of new ideas

  Attendances at meetings

 

 

Other close working relationships with:

  Logistics Manager – who will arrange dates to meet league requirements

  Competition Secretary (or their Player’s Yearbook Secretary) for the inclusion of the league programmes

  Marketing Manager:

o   (or their Publicity and Press Officer) for the reporting of league news

o   (or their Web Site Manager) to keep up-to-date results on the web.

 

Other important relationships with:

  Treasurer for the receipt of entry fees and award of prizes

  Logistics Manager (or their Presentations’ Secretary) regarding the presentation of prizes

 

Desirable Jobholder Qualities:

  A strong interest, and experience of playing in competitive league bowls

  Good organizational skills

  Good communication & interpersonal skills

  Good computer skills (in particular, with spreadsheets & word processing)

  Familiarity with budgetary processes

  E-mail, telephone and mobile phone facilities
